We partnered with Xcaret Parks in Mexico to transform all seven of their parks into sensory-inclusive destinations. Our collaboration aimed to enhance the experience for guests with sensory differences, ensuring they could enjoy the parks comfortably and fully. Our collaboration began with a shared commitment to inclusivity. The goal was ambitious: to assess each activity and show at Xcaret Parks for its sensory impact, introduce new experiences specifically tailored for neurodivergent guests, and provide detailed, easy-to-understand information to help these visitors navigate the parks with ease.
The primary objectives of this partnership were to:
1.Assess Sensory Impact: Evaluate each activity and show for their sensory impact, identifying potential challenges for neurodivergent visitors.
2.Enhance Visitor Experience: Develop new experiences tailored for neurodivergent individuals to ensure they have an enjoyable visit.
3.Provide Detailed Information: Create comprehensive guides and resources to help neurodivergent guests navigate the parks with ease and confidence.
Xcaret Parks, renowned for their immersive natural and cultural experiences, welcomed millions of visitors each year. However, they recognized the need to better serve guests with sensory sensitivities. Sensory Access embarked on a comprehensive project to audit each park, assess sensory impacts, and work with the Xcaret team to implement tailored solutions.
Detailed Audits and Sensory Ratings
Our first step was to conduct detailed audits of each of the seven Xcaret parks. These audits involved:
The sensory impact ratings focused on the following elements:
Environmental Factors:
We assessed environmental factors like crowd density, temperature, and available quiet spaces, ensuring a holistic understanding of the sensory landscape.
Collaboration and Customization
Based on our assessments, we collaborated closely with the Xcaret team to develop customized solutions for enhancing sensory accessibility:
Armed with our findings, we began to reimagine the Xcaret experience. One of our most significant achievements was the creation of Sensory Zones. These designated quiet areas are strategically placed throughout the parks, providing a peaceful retreat for those who might feel overwhelmed. Equipped with noise-canceling headphones, calming visuals, and comfortable seating, these zones offer a sanctuary for relaxation and recharging.
We also introduced modified shows, specifically tailored for sensory-sensitive audiences. By reducing volume levels, softening lighting, and simplifying visuals, we ensured that the magic of Xcaret’s performances could be enjoyed by all.
Our commitment to inclusivity didn’t stop there. We designed interactive experiences that cater specifically to neurodivergent visitors. From tactile exploration stations where guests can touch and feel different textures, to sensory-friendly nature walks and gentle animal encounters, these activities offer enriching experiences that respect each visitor’s sensory needs.
At Xcaret Park, the amazing staff will help autistic visitors release Macaws into the wild, release healed butterflies back into nature, and feed toucans. The staff is incredibly kind, patient, and absolutely amazing.
To ensure neurodivergent guests can plan their visit with confidence, we created detailed guides that include:
Sensory Maps: Visual guides indicating the sensory intensity of different areas within the parks, helping visitors avoid high-stimulation zones if needed.
Activity Ratings: Each activity and show was rated for sensory impact, with clear explanations of what visitors can expect.
Preparation Guides: Tips and strategies for neurodivergent visitors to prepare for their visit, including what to bring, how to handle sensory overload, and where to find sensory zones.
